A meditative painting..... and a starry night which needs your help!

Good morning Friends,
I've got two paintings to show you today, both painted in watercolour.
The first is a calm, meditative one.

The Boathouse

I can imagine sitting on the foreground island and getting lost in a reverie.

The second is a starry night abstract, which I really struggled to photograph. It may be my little compact Fuji Finepix isn't up to the job. The electric blue rings are all painted to the same level - blue all the way round. Yet when I photographed them, some turned out white! How that happens, I have no clue. Perhaps you can help me, by giving me some tips on how to photograph a night time painting. Until then, I'll have to let you imagine that all the rings are indeed blue.

The Voyage Home

Looking forward to hearing your suggestions, and your comments on my paintings.

  1. Morning, Pat! Great paintings, the starry night is very original and beautiful. Blogger does strange things to images lately, mostly they show darker. So don't blame your camera, it may be Blogger. I had problems and so did other bloggers. Have a good week!

    1. Thanks Judy! I wasn't aware of blogger problems on photos, so it's good to know it may not be my camera!

  2. both are beautiful. I love the blue of the second one and I can certainly picture myself relaxing at that boat house staring off into space.
I'm no help with the picture taking thing. I have problems all the time.trying to get something to look the way I see it

    1. Thanks, Ann. I'm glad you like them both. Usually I don't have any problems with pics, but this one had me beat - and I took about a dozen pics of it!

  3. Hi, Pat,
I'm not a mechanical person at all. Mmmm... I do not even guess why...
Or a camera (= mechanic) does not have sensitivity to pick up your blue. Does it make sense?
Always photos do not pick up like real colours. Once, I asked camera club members for help, but they had no absolute solutions. Printing as well. Ink has only a few colours, we know.
    Kind regards, Sadami

    1. What you say makes sense, Sadami. I have always known that my camera struggles to reproduce reds true to colour, but now I can add dark blues to that list!

  4. I really love the starry one.
i know how difficult it may get sometimes to photograph paintings even with a good camera. And Blues are the most difficult colors to get right in a photograph. I wish I could give some suggestions, but I have none. :(

    1. Thanks, Prabal. I didn't know that about blues, because for me it was always reds!

  5. My photography skills are appalling so I can't help! But still, I enjoyed your paintings - particularly the abstract :0)

    1. Thanks, Maywyn. I have an excellent photo program in DigiKam, the above result is the best it could get it. The problem is how the camera is picking it up. Glad you enjoyed the pics :) xx

  8. I like both paintings. Abstract very interesting. I like the lower left side with the largest 'star' and the dark area. (You can tell I'm SO not an artist, but I do enjoy seeing these.)

  9. Dear Pat you are so versatile with your art...you can paint such a calm lovely scene and then work on something beautifully abstract. You are just brimming with talent and I always love seeing your art. Hope you are having a delightful day.

  10. Huh! Is the paint maybe reflecting extra light? Do you have a scanner?

    1. Maybe it was reflecting - and no, I don't have a scanner. :(

  12. I have trouble photographing paintings, too. Some colors just do not come through well, and others [especially with multiple glazes] overwhelm the rest. I think it's just the nature of painting, camera and computer.

    1. Thanks, Kathryn, I have a feeling it could be the nature of the beast too - though I've a couple of things to try out. Will let you know if I have any luck! xx

  13. Good morning Pat. Firstly, thank you for visiting and being a member of my blog. Unfortunately, I'm unable to offer any advice on photography, my own efforts pay testimony to that! I will say though, I've noticed a marked difference in the way digital cameras perform compared to the old SLR cameras. My cheap digital camera often washes out colour and unifies tones. Perhaps a better quality one would be a benefit for me. Out of the question due to finances!!! The boathouse picture is a lovely, calm image. I love it's quiet, open atmosphere which is conveyed by your delicate handling of the subject. Magical!!

  14. Hi, Pat! I have no ideas on why the colors didn't turn out right in the photo. I do like the paintings, though! They're both so different. Very nicely done!
