Today I have adapted one of my photos of the Houses of Parliament to produce this painting
London River Thames: Summer Cruise
When I look at a photo, I try to see what can happily be left out and still have the painting work.
In this one, I left out the bridge that crosses the river, the buildings to the left and the actual sky and water reflections.
Every single photo I take can be adapted. Not all of them are, because sometimes I am fortunate enough to take just the photo I want to paint. I used to paint only what was in front of me, but now I tend to pick and choose. The result is a somewhat more creative painting.
I can't remember who said it, but someone did - and what they said was: What you leave out is as important as what you put in. Good advice!

London River Thames: Evening Cruise
Like many artists, I have a huge file on my computer containing photos I might one day paint.
I decided it was time to do some clearing out - and whilst doing that, found a couple of London ones I still fancied painting.
These were taken during a walk beside the River Thames and I got a little experimental with the painting - but then, you wouldn't expect anything less!
Here, Boudicca's statue with the clock tower housing Big Ben in the background..
London River Thames: Evening Cruise
Painted on Saunders Waterford paper, 140lb rough and measuring 15"x 11"
