The Alphabet Paintings: E

E is for.................

Eglantine

The Eglantine rose is found in hedgerows; its thorny and the leaves smell of apple. Pretty little flower followed by beautiful rose hips.
Eglantine is sometimes called Sweet Briar.

  2. Very nice. The way you have used some pink and yellow of the flowers and leaves in the background keeps the eye moving.

  5. This is so nice Pat, and your wet on wet technique works really well with the subject.

We used to call these 'dog roses', and I remember in 1959 we were offered threepence a pound at school for collecting the hips in the Autumn. The school would sell them on at double that to make rosehip syrup. I collected bags of the things!

  9. Thanks, everyone - nice to come home to such lovely comments!
I put some of the same colours in the background to give a hint of more of the same a little way away.

My art tutor called them dog roses too, Frank. I wonder if he collected the hips also? I remember as a youngster being given rosehip syrup to build up my immunity!
