The Density of Science

Today, no reading reams about what I'm up to in a painting, just the work to view and enjoy :)

  1. Aw Pat, I quite like the reams explaining what youve been up to :) Oh well, I'll just enjoy the painting ... and a lovely one it is too! Is this about the fragile balance of heart and mind and how we can be ruled by one or the other?

  2. Didn't realise you'd miss the long explanation, Michael.
Tell you what, I'll let a few more people comment and sometime tomorrow I'll post a comment here telling you what was in my mind. In the meantime, its interesting for me to see what people make of it :) xx

  3. Hi, Pat,
Interesting work! I've wondered Heart/Conscience and Science are on the balance? Full of many controversial topics. Leave it to you, Pat. Look forward to your explanation.
    Cheers, Sadami

  5. I had to think about this one, lovely painting btw!
What I see is: fresh fruits and vegs against artificial flavourings an colourings. I know which way the balance would go in my opinion...

  7. Judy, please - don't say sorry!
You saw something wonderful.. and if you saw it in a gallery, that's the lasting impression. I'm glad that people see things in my paintings and don't need explanations.

and I'd be on the side of wholesome too :)

Actually, its not too far away from the underlying thoughts I had anyway !

  10. I think you have to tell us what was in your mind when you're doing this painting because it can produce many explanations from many people. What I see for instance in the balance are a heart and a cigarette. It seems cigarette use is more important than men's concern of their heart. He.he.he. I'm anxious to know what you meant of this painting. I like this...guessing or interpreting one's painting.

  11. Now Cora, in a gallery you would not have an explanation - its nice for me to see what people think of my painting without explanation. :)

I hadn't thought that the one might look like a cigarette.. but there you are!
I'm glad you enjoyed the interpreting :) xx

  12. At first glance I thought it to be a cigarette too. Fun to give us something to contemplate today.

  13. Well, I may have to rethink my painting technique now, Tonya ;)
It is meant to be a test tube, of course.
I'm glad its making you all think, though :) xx

  15. To me this represents the difficulties that the US is going through regarding many issues and especially about being led by heart or the corporate bottom line. Thanks for painting what you feel!

  16. Wow, Karen!
Its so fascinating seeing what feelings it provokes in others. xx

  19. It reminds me of the balance of the heart and soul, something that concerns Ancient Egypt, although the statue is not Egyptian :-))
    Nice work Pat!

  20. Well done, Francesco!
Maat and the weighing of the human heart and soul were upper in my mind - only I never used the Feather of Maat because I wasn't too sure how many people would recognise it. The Lady is Justice.. she's been around in some form in statues since Roman times.

The whole story then, is I wanted to depict Justice weighing everything human (depicted by the heart) against the scientific. Science did not achieve a perfect balance. It is weighted down by the demanding of proof for everything under the sun - hence its density. In mass and stupidity.

Thanks everyone, for all your insights. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading them ! xx

  25. Hi Pat. Forgive me that I have not written you so long, but there was always lots of visitors there. Your paintings are wonderful. I had no time for drawing and painting. Monday I go for a week on vacation. Camera and sketchbook are already packed. When I get back I will write again.
