The Persistence of Dreams

One of the two paintings I was working on in tandem is finished  - and here it is for your enjoyment.
Painted in a surreal fashion, with hidden meaning, which I love!

  3. I'm pretty sure my husband would be delighted to catch a fish as big as this! A fishermans dream :0)

  4. You've got me stumped on the hidden meaning on this one Pat (scratches head). No doubt you will put us all out of our misery soon ?

  5. Hi, Pat,
Your idea is wonderful, connecting a kite, a koi and a person or you. The landscape is mysterious. Could be, it implies your inner world. Surrealism seems to go beyond reality.

  7. Thanks, everyone - here's the history and meaning :)

There is a history to koi kites.. in Japan they have Children's day where koi kites are flown and the parents hope that the children take on some of the attributes of the koi fish - determination and persistence.
The koi came to symbolise these through an ancient legend that had them swimming upstream trying to get past a waterfall. One koi managed this at Dragon Gate and was turned into an auspicious good fortune dragon by the gods.
The dream is for the children to be determined and have good fortune as a result.
This is the story of a little person standing on the edge of the big earth with the determination to fly high through it all...

I had fun painting it, hope you had fun thinking on it :)

  8. I am glad that I saw the comment just above mine where you explained. I actually was on the right track in my thinking. We actually did a small study about kite day in Japan and also in Korea (I think it was Korea). Kites are very important to them. We have a couple of good books about it. I love children's historical fiction. I learn so much!
This painting is wonderful. It took me right back to thinking about that story about a young boy and his Kite day experiences.
