Painting like the Masters - Monet

On the Painting Friends forum (link on right) we have a monthly challenge - to paint like one of the masters.
For April, the masterful painter chosen was Monet.

I'm not a huge fan of Monet, but will confess I only knew his water lilies - and they aren't my cup of tea.  So I searched the gallery for his paintings and was pleasantly surprised to see the "woman with parasol" I really liked this one. Now, how to get the feel of an oil, when using watercolour.  Not easy, but I gave it my best shot - and here's the result.  Do feel free to tell me what you think - and if it could be improved any :)

After Monet

  1. Oh Pat... I think she's lovely!! I never thought how difficult it must be to paint a well known oil painting in watercolors... You've done a fabulous job!
By the by... I like Monet - I think he suffered from astigmatism as he saw the world much as I do without my glasses!

  4. Yes this has a feel of Monet.. You said you were trying to get the feel of oils using watercolor. That is difficult. You can try not to do it and still get the feel of Monet.

  5. You can, indeed, Prabal!
But I like the difficult route ;)

  9. Hi Pat, I really like the result. True, it is not easy to interpret a painting watercolor that has been thought in oil, but to you has been superb. Congratulations!

  13. Hello Pat!
I like your work, it was delicate and freshness of spring.
My suggestion if you allow me, use the watercolor at its best, with its full potential for creativity and plasticity.
I understand that the proposal is to study the great masters, but do not hold your technique, it is important to study the composition, color, movement, visual pathway, and there is an interesting reading of Monet with a free interpretation of the Pat .
    Congratulations and big hug

  14. Thanks, Carmen :) xx

    Thank you, Conchi xx

Thanks Judy, was difficult to start with, but I enjoyed it :) xx

    Thanks Maria xx

For the challenge, Nil, I did try to paint like him. What I will do in the future is take a little of this technique into the next painting and the next, until it all merges seamlessly and I find a style that is just mine. Right now, I still feel as if I am mouldable as a painter, so I am taking every opportunity I can to learn :)
    *hugs* xx

  16. Dear Pat,
Well done! Your work captures the mood of the original work. In my view, technical issues are small things and obviously, watercolor is different from oil, as you/we know. But your work successfuly sends the atmospher such as light, a breeze and a lady's body language. Congratulations.
    Kind regards, Sadami

  26. I'm not a huge fan of Monet either and I didn't know this painting. I think its a great exercice to copy the masters and you did it very well. Excelent work. From the image of this painting I found in Google, I would say you could improve the scarf, it seems to me it didn't go behind the head so much. It's the only thing to say. Really a god job, Pat!

Do you know this artist that won a prize with a watercolour named Tree?Take a look:http://www.grahamfransella.com.au/ and than tell me what you think about it.
Its too hard to understand an judge art works!! xx
