A Different Curtain - work in progress

Its a long time since I showed you a Work In Progress, so today the camera came out and I am recording the steps, for you to enjoy.

the photo came from Morguefile and is of the Jim Henson Memorial

As I drew this, I was humming the Muppet tune, "its time to put on make up, its time to light the lights, its time to raise the curtain on the Muppet show tonight."

So the name came to me of " A Different Curtain" because that's what Jim and Kermy are raising now.

On with the painting.. after the drawing, I painted the shadows first!

and then I put a wash of yellow ochre over most all the painting. This will help make it a cohesive whole - and will also help to make the wall behind recede.

I'll post more as I progress.
Hope you are all enjoying your Sunday :) xx

  1. The first stages look promising, great drawing! Looking forward to the end result, Pat! Funny you paint the shadows first.

  2. Painting shadows first is a technique I employ sometimes, but always on statues - which this was. Somehow it makes the bronze easier. I then touch them up near the end if they aren't strong enough. :)

  3. I'm looking forward to seeing this take shape. Aw, the muppets, such happy memories and essential viewing. Jim Henson was an absolute genius and I think this is going to be a fine tribute to him :)

  8. Dear Pat,
Me, too, always put shadows or dark areas first. Ah, Kermy! My young days!! Little Sadami hardly believed people moved muppets. Look forward to a next.
    Cheers, Sadami

  9. I am a huge fan of the Muppets. I always have been. My favorite Christmas movie is the Muppets Christmas Carol. I think I'm going to watch it tomorrow. Yes, I do believe I will. :)

  12. Since I haven't done much watercolor, I so appreciate when artists document their technique. Keep posting your progress.
