Christmas is coming...

and I thought - cards! Why not try and paint some for Christmas?
So I ordered a pack of 10, not because of that few friends, but because I wasn't sure how well my small paintings would come out.
These cards were only 5x3 inches, you see!

Christmas cards should have some religious theme - after all, its the reason for the season, yes?

So on with the painting.. the barn, the crib, the infant Jesus, the Holy Family, the animals, a feed trough, three kings, a star, a starry night sky with aurora effects and shrubbery in the landscape. Everything but the kitchen sink!

I stepped back from the painting and laughed - it looks to me as if a complete novice has painted it! It is not my best!
So I show it to you, my blogging friends, just so you know, some days, the painting doesn't quite come out on paper as you had it in your head!

  6. Pat, don't be so critic with yourself, even if it is not what you had in mind, this card is fine. I'm sure that who will receive it will be happy, first because its yours and second because this card is unique! Un abbraccio.

  7. Thanks, Tito.
You're right of course, whoever receives it will be happy because of the thought behind it. And thank you for the hug ! ciao xx

  8. I love it too! Don't forget, a lot of us don't paint at all, and really don't see the same things you see when you look at it! I would be happy to paint that well, (you silly) LOL!

  9. I've never been happier to be called silly, Debi!
Of course , you too are right, how would a non painter see what I see?
Thank you for pointing that out to me! xx

  11. It's beautiful, Pat. Has a simplicity and freshness of color that allows you to focus on the reason for the card... the Holy Family. If it were in a store.... I'd buy it.

  14. It's very easy to criticize our own work. I really like the colors you used and the extra "pen work" (I'm guesing). It has a very dramatic and yet peaceful feel.

  15. Yes, indeed, Gretchen -it does have extra pen work. I'm glad you like the feel of it xx

  16. It is so beautiful. I love homemade things and I am one that keeps her cards from years and years ago. In fact I still have one that was sent to my family in 1975. Now that I do scrapbooking I am putting some of them into it.

  20. As stated above, a non-painter doesn't see what a painter sees! Same as a non- quilter, correct?
I love it, and think it is wonderful because it is handmade. I KNOW the person receiving it will appreciate it so much...in fact, I know they can't wait to look at it in person!! :0)

  21. Same as a non quilter - Correct!
I hope the person concerned is just as happy when it arrives :) xx

  25. I disagree with you Pat! I really like its naive quality - It gives it a 'quirkiness'! Christmas seems to loom upon us more and more quickly every year doesn't it?

  26. ha! I think there's a few here disagreeing with me, Sandra! which is very kind of you all.
Christmas does come earlier if you hand make cards and presents :) xx

  27. Oh Pat I love it!
I've been trying to keep up with everyone on my iPad. I thought I commented, but it doesn't seem as if it worked from that. xoxo

  28. Thanks, Dora!
Once you get used to it, the iPad will probably be brilliant. We had one old dear at art club last night had an iPhone and she was swapping those screens around like a seasoned pro. Just what you get used to, I suppose :)

  29. Pat, I don't think watercolour paintings ever do come out quite like you envisage them to in your head. That unpredictability factor is what makes this medium so fascinating to me.

While this is not the best Christmas card I have ever seen, what matters is that you painted it and your friends will see that and think "Ooee, look at her with her artwork printed in cards, ain't she posh"!!!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Printed, Frank? Not here, they get the original... like it or lump it

I too love the unpredictability, it does make watercolour fascinating. I much prefer larger sizes though, 5 inches by 3 inches is just not my size!
