The Sansevieria Series I

I wanted to see how different mediums affected how an item was portrayed in art. I picked a sansevieria (mother-in-law's tongue) as my subject, and set about experimenting.

This first painting is in watercolour and ink - a pen and wash.

Sam and Shannon

Today's paintings were created as a present for a young lady, Shannon.
She owns a spaniel called Sam.

The first painting is something a little different, in that the outline of Sam the dog is made up of his name, but the nose, eyes and heart are made up of Shannon's! Painted in watercolour and ink.

The second is Sam painted in a more traditional painting, created in watercolour.

P1, this painting needs a name!

Sometimes you create something different in art, just because you want to be different.

This watercolour and ink is one of those. Different.
Also, I struggled to think of a name for this painting, so all suggestions gratefully received! Until then, P1 (for primate) will do.

K2, the Water Kelpies.

In Scotland, there are some magnificent horse sculptures called the Kelpies.
When we went on our Loch Tay cruise, we were told about the Water Kelpies, one of whom was said to live at the bottom of the Loch. They take the shape of horses.

Although I'd painted water kelpies previously, I'd recently got some new art supplies, so I painted them again. This time using ink and pearlescent acrylic ink.

It's hard to see the subtle sparkle on the screen, but as the light changes, so does the way this painting appears.

Even though it was a different medium to watercolour, I still used St Cuthberts Mill Saunders Waterford paper - and it behaved, beautifully.

Views, dogs, mixing up the painting and inspiration!

Good morning friends,
how are you all?

I've been visiting so many new places here in Scotland, garnering so many ideas for paintings that I am printing photos as I go now, in case I lose track of them all. Currently I have seven drawn out and sitting in paper stretchers, waiting for the watercolour magic to begin!

Firstly, let me show you a painted view of the beautiful Lomond Hills.

You may notice it isn't quite as realistic as previous paintings, because I am trying to convey an emotional response also. I hope you enjoy it.

Also, a new acquaintance wanted a portrait of her dog painted, so this is Blackie

after I drew that portrait, I drew a second of the same dog, so that I could experiment a little. I love exploration, whether it be travel or  painting!
Here is my experimentation, and it's a mixture of ink and watercolour.

Fun with Sun

After painting the last two intricate sunflowers, I decided to paint a fast and loose, fun sunflower.
This is on Bockingford Extra Rough and was created using watercolour, Graphik Line Painters and Ink.

Ben Kilt

This is a painting I created yesterday, Mothers Day here in the UK.
It was painted for a very special dog 'mum and dad' .

Lynne and Stuart loved Ben so much, he was a part of their wedding day. This watercolour and ink was from one of the wedding photographs.
Sadly, early last week, Ben was found to have multiple cancerous tumours. Lynne and Stuart lost their beloved dog. They had seen him through sudden onset spinal injury, got him the best care and saw him walk again. He was a well travelled dog, going on many holidays with them both.
There are a raft of happy memories of the much loved Ben.
I hope this painting will become another.

Summer in the City

Yesterday our art club re-started after the Christmas break.
I took in two pieces of paper, knowing that one painting was going to use very wet washes, so whilst it was drying I worked on the second.

This abstract was finished last night, in watercolour and ink, I call it:

On a Creative Path

My mummy says she's on a creative path - that is why she paints and doodles with ink - a lot!

Four Square Otter

I am sometimes asked if I paint in anything other than watercolour.
The answer is usually no - other mediums aggravate my asthma.

But with this otter I did use a few different techniques.
The first is in coloured pencil, the second, pen and wash, the third ink only and the fourth a true watercolour.

It is interesting to see which people get drawn to, as I have all four on display, in a square. Luckily for them I have absolutely no psychology training, else they could be revealing untold mysteries about themselves!
